“Hiking Ventana Canyon in the Catalina Mountains on the edge of Tucson, I was in search of water for painting ideas. With periodic winter rains, I was in luck, as I had to step-stone shallow streamlets, pools and brooklets many times. Thank goodness for hiking poles or I would have been destined for wet feet. The late February, low sun cast bold shadows down steep hillsides from the cliffs above. As the desert quickly soaked up this moisture, even in February, hints of green and a few yellow wildflowers sprouted early across sunny hillsides. A magical time in the desert!” Darcie Peet
