Don Spaulding Hide Hunters buffalo Native American Indian rifle gun battle horse equine western oil painting

Don Spaulding biography:

Donald Spaulding’s artistic talents were recognized early. Encouraged by his high school teachers to pursue formal art training, he studied at the Art Students League in New York City a month before the draft called in 1944.

Following his military service, he returned to the Art Students League for four years of study under Frank Vincent DuMond, Robert Beverly Hale and William McNulty. In addition, he studied for five months with Norman Rockwell in his Vermont studio.

In 1952, he started his career as a freelance illustrator by painting covers for Lone Ranger and other Dell comic books. For the next 25 years, Spaulding worked for a wide range of publishing clients. In 1976, he ventured into the world of Western paintings. Four years later, Spaulding had become a full-time Western artist.

Spaulding’s paintings have appeared on the covers of national magazines and are owned by several museums, including West Point Museum, New York; Fort Riley Cavalry Museum, Kansas; United States War College and The Pentagon, both in Washington, D.C.; and the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia.
