“Placing the male and female figures back-to-back created an interesting feeling of closeness and of cooperative support. And yet, facing away from each other and being equal in height conveys a sense of equality and individuality. Much in the way of symbolism was incorporated into the sculpture. For example, the placement of the guitar ties the composition together and represents the arts as well as campus social life. Surrounding the base, various books represent the foundation of campus life, education and knowledge. The male figure is relaxed, gangly, athletic. The female is more formal. Of the books, several are religious, others represent history, science and literature. As a personal touch, one is labeled “An Autobiography,” and it carries my initials.” Ed Fraughton
