“Legend has it that the courting flute was originally given as a gift by the woodland animals to a bashful young man who had trouble communicating with the woman he loved. The animals put their voices in the flute so as to speak on his behalf.

Stories like this one are not uncommon in Native culture. For me, creating a sculpture that has life in it often comes down to the story I heard. My sculpture shows a proud and confident man. His new bride, although slightly shy, reaches for his hand, which is still holding the courting flute.”   John Coleman
