“Farmer’s Market”
“As subject matter, I picked a mother with her daughter carrying chickens to go to the farmer’s market place to sell it, because it is part of their daily life. The people I depicted are living in Southwest China, where the market day is normally three times a week, and people came from the surrounding area. Here, not just their story interested me, but the artistic elements as well. In the painting, the mother carried the basket with chickens and her right hand held a rooster. She expected and believed it would be a good day for business. Her daughter seemed to have a conversation with the hen she carried, who caught her eye. The startling light of the painting played a main role, while the stone wall and steps in the shadow with atmospheric richness on the background contrast with the illuminated place on the ground. It revealed a lively scene, and I hope the viewer looks at the painting and enjoys entering the painted world of the farmer market day.” Jie Wei Zhou
