Nicholas Coleman biography:
Born in 1978 in Provo, Utah, Nicholas Coleman has been drawing and painting for as long as he can remember. A deep love for the outdoors has shaped his life and work; the only time he spends indoors is when he’s translating his experiences in the field into gouache and oil on canvas.
Nicholas has traveled extensively across Europe, immersing himself in the study of history and the masterpieces housed in art museums. His artistic journey has also taken him across North America and Africa, often alongside his father, renowned western and wildlife artist Michael Coleman. These travels—whether for hunting, fishing, or exploration—offered abundant opportunities for sketching, photography, and field studies that continue to inform his studio work. His time living and working in Brazil on a mission further expanded his worldview and artistic sensitivity.
Although his father remains a major influence, Coleman draws inspiration from a wide range of masters including Charles M. Russell, Frederick Edwin Church, J.M.W. Turner, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, Philip R. Goodwin, Ray Harris Ching, and Bruno Liljefors. He embraces a traditional academic approach in his technique, and while he primarily works in oil and gouache, he is also exploring etching and sculpture.
Coleman’s style defies strict categorization. While rooted in realism, his work carries an impressionistic spontaneity, aiming to evoke a specific time of day or emotional tone. His goal is to invite the viewer into the scene—to feel the air, sense the moment, and almost step into the landscape.
A piece of advice from his father has stayed with him: “You’re only as good as your last painting.” That sentiment fuels his relentless drive to grow and improve as an artist.
Among his many accolades is the Award of Merit for Wildlife at the Artist of a New Century exhibition held at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont.
