Jill Soukup biography:
Jill Soukup’s art is defined by duality — the interplay of opposites such as light and shadow, motion and stillness, realism and abstraction. Exploring the balance between painterly expression and representational form, she creates works that capture both the physical and emotional essence of her subjects. Through these contrasts, Soukup seeks beauty and harmony, reflecting her belief that opposing forces coexist and depend on one another.
Her process is deeply tactile and intuitive. Working in thick layers of oil, she uses both brush and palette knife to shape color, texture, and form. Horses and urban landscapes are her most recognizable subjects — seemingly disparate worlds that reveal her fascination with the tension between the organic and the constructed. Whether painting the fluid grace of an animal or the hard geometry of a city, Soukup explores how each defines and enhances the other.
Soukup’s art is as much about feeling as it is about structure. She draws inspiration from everyday life — from simple domestic moments to the patterns of light and shadow in her Denver surroundings. Her compositions often begin with digital studies that she manipulates to discover balance and movement before translating them into oil on canvas. Each work becomes a dialogue between intuition and discipline, spontaneity and control.
Before pursuing painting full time, Soukup worked as a graphic designer after earning her B.A. in Fine Art from Colorado State University. That experience honed her understanding of composition, professionalism, and visual communication, skills that continue to inform her artistic practice. Transitioning from design to fine art required faith and persistence — qualities that remain central to her creative philosophy.
Now an established artist and mother, Soukup continues to find new inspiration in the contrasts that shape her life and work. Her paintings have been featured in exhibitions such as the Coors Western Art Exhibit and the Women Artists of the West’s national show at Saks Galleries. With each piece, she invites viewers to contemplate the harmony found within opposing forces — a reflection of the balance that defines both her art and her journey.
