Jesse Powell biography:
Jesse Powell (b. 1977, Los Angeles, California) is a third-generation artist whose work is deeply informed by a lifelong connection to the California coast. Having spent most of his life immersed in its landscapes, Powell has developed a profound respect for a natural environment that is rapidly disappearing. His early exposure to art, strongly influenced by his father, artist John Powell, fostered a lasting dedication to painting.
Powell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from the University of Puget Sound, and later pursued advanced study in Russian Impressionism in the Republic of Georgia. There, he trained under the mentorship of Nicholai Dubovik, Ilya Yatsenko, and John Wurdeman, refining his technical foundation and deepening his understanding of traditional painting methods.
Continuing his education, Powell attended numerous workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, studying with artists including Matt Smith, George Strickland, and Kenn Backhaus, among others. His work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions at prominent institutions such as the Laguna Art Museum, the Pasadena Museum of California History, the Pasadena Museum of California Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and the Autry National Center.
Powell is an Artist Member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society, as well as a Signature Member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. His work has been included in the Irvine Museum’s permanent collection in Southern California, exhibited alongside historical masters of California Impressionism.
