Dwayne Harty Biography:

Dwayne Harty was born in 1957 in rural Saskatchewan, Canada. As a youth, he often accompanied his father on camping trips and spent several months a year at the Okanagan Summer School for the Arts in British Colombia, providing him the opportunity to observe and portray large animals such as grizzly bears, elk and buffalo.

Harty also benefited from contact with painters such as John Clymer, Paul Strisik, Harley Brown and Robert Lougheed, among others. A painter of western and wildlife subjects who works in an Impressionistic manner, Lougheed was especially influential in Harty’s development, encouraging him to work en plein air, whose technical expertise exerted and important influence on him.

Harty is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, from whom he received the Award of Excellence at the 1993 annual exhibition. He has taught at the University of Regina, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Sonora Desert museum in Tucson and frequently lectures on topics related to wildlife art.
