Frank Serrano biography:
Contemporary plein air painter Frank M. Serrano was born in Los Angeles on November 29, 1967. Drawn early to both art and nature, he studied art throughout his school years and is largely self-taught. His natural aptitude led to a successful career as a freelance commercial artist, but in the early 1990s Serrano chose to pursue his true passion—traditional oil painting. Since then, he has developed a devoted following of collectors and admirers across the United States and internationally.
An avid outdoorsman, Serrano is widely recognized for his keen atmospheric sensitivity and his ability to translate a deeply personal experience of place directly onto canvas. Working primarily en plein air, he paints with immediacy and intuition, capturing the subtle light, color, and mood of the landscape. In 2003, he wrote and illustrated Plein Air Painting in Oil, published by the Walter Foster Company, a respected handbook for emerging plein air painters and collectors of the genre.
Serrano travels extensively throughout North America, painting subjects ranging from the desert Southwest to the dramatic high-country vistas of the Canadian Rockies. A defining characteristic of his work is his masterful portrayal of the hazy, luminous atmosphere of the American West. He cites early California landscape painter Sam Hyde Harris as a significant influence. In 2002, Serrano traveled to Sweden, producing a notable series of field sketches inspired by the country’s scenic landscapes.
“Painting on location enriches my life,” Serrano explains. “These works are not merely pictures, but a visual journal through which I express all my senses.”
While most of his paintings are executed on location alla prima, Serrano also works in his studio, creating larger compositions informed by his outdoor studies. He firmly believes that the foundation of painting is direct observation from life. Frank M. Serrano is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, where he also serves as Chairman of the Gold Medal Juried Exhibition.
