Pahponee Small Buffalo Nation Native American pot bronze sculpture buffalo western side

Pahponee biography:

Pahponee (Kickapoo), whose name means “Snow Woman,” is a contemporary Native American potter whose work reflects the enduring traditions of Woodland pottery. A descendant of the Kickapoo and Potawatomi Nations, she traces her ancestral roots to the Great Lakes region. Pahponee began creating pottery in the early 1980s and is a self-taught artist who has re-learned and revitalized the traditional ceramic methods of her culture.

Her journey into pottery was shaped by a profound, life-changing experience. Pahponee was taken to witness a White Buffalo mother and her calf—an event considered sacred and deeply significant among many Native Nations. Following this auspicious encounter, she began dreaming repeatedly of a specific White Buffalo pottery vessel, along with other beautifully formed pots. Though she initially did not know how to create them, these visions became the catalyst for her artistic path.

Guided by tradition, intuition, and spiritual inspiration, Pahponee has developed a distinctive body of work that honors ancestral knowledge while speaking in a contemporary voice. Her pottery has been widely recognized, earning numerous awards at both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Indian Market. In addition, her work and artistic journey have been featured in a variety of magazines and publications.
