Russell Houston biography:
Russell Houston is an American artist known for his vibrant and expressive depictions of the American West. Born in California and raised in Arizona, Houston developed a deep love for both art and Western culture from an early age. He often says he didn’t choose art—art chose him.
After graduating from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Houston began his career as an award-winning illustrator. Not long after, he shifted his focus to fine art, a move that allowed him to fully explore his passion for Western subjects, landscapes, and humor-infused storytelling.
Houston gained national attention in 1993 with his painting Hazard on the 4th Hole, inspired by a vintage photo of cowboys golfing in the desert. The success of that piece led to a popular series of cowboy golf paintings, featured in major publications such as People Magazine, Sports Illustrated, The Los Angeles Times, and Western Horseman. To date, he has released thirteen cowboy golf paintings.
Beyond humor, Houston is committed to capturing the spirit and beauty of traditional Western life. His paintings are rich in color and light, reflecting his deep connection to the land, its people, and animals. His work has been exhibited and honored in prestigious venues including The George Phippen and Peppertree Ranch art shows.
Today, Russell Houston lives with his family in the scenic White Mountains of Arizona, where the landscape continues to inspire his celebrated Western artworks.
