“Ghosts In The Shadows”

Years ago, ever since riding into Canyon De Chelly, on horseback, in May, with four other artists to paint for a week, I have always wanted to return in the winter.  Snowfall creates an entirely different mood as it mutes sound creating an atmosphere of utter silence and stillness. The world of color is also different as blue and lavender snow shadows along with sparkling, sunlit snow dance in contrast to the soaring red rock cliffs.  We watched the weather patterns as Christmas approached waiting for a storm to move in to blanket the canyons.  It was a cold, snowy, late December day, when along with our Navajo guide, we drove as far as possible into Canyon Del Muerto, in the Canyon De Chelly National Monument.  Deep untracked snow would not let us go any further, but we had reached the Mummy Cave Ruins, that eerily looked out over the valley reminding us of the storied history of these unusual, red-rock canyons, and thus the title “Ghosts in the Shadows.”   Darcie Peet
