“Jet Trails, Gold And Fall Asters”

“A trip to collect reference material for a commission took me to the small, Colorado, mining town of Lake City.  Just outside of town, my journey took me further up the narrow, winding, canyon, dirt road past now-deserted, mining operations that finally opened up to this sweeping meadow at the base of Engineer Pass.  Brilliant, autumn aspen dotted the wide grassy meadow and lower hillsides, while groups of sun-lit evergreen were illuminated against the deepening shadows of late afternoon.  Lavender asters, usually the last wildflower color of the season, were scattered amongst dried seed pods and slender fall grasses for all kinds of shapes and textures at the base of the aspen.  High above the surrounding, snow-tipped peaks, patterns of jet trails cris-crossing the azure-blue sky were such a contemporary contrast to the “sense of time gone by” and mining history we passed earlier.”   Darcie Peet
