“May Melt Sparkle”

“Steeped in Colorado’s mining history, off Fremont Pass and between Copper Mountain and Leadville lies Mayflower Gulch.  At the edge of timberline at 10,996 ft, is the trailhead for the journey along Mayflower Creek.  Off to the right in the evergreens is an old, ore wagon road from the 1800’s that climbs past mining cabin and equipment remnants finally opening up at the base of the cirque of peaks ahead in the painting called Mayflower Amphitheater.  May is such a dramatic time of year to explore given plenty of snow yet to melt on the high mountains set against deep, azure blue skies.  The angle of the late afternoon light makes the snowfields glisten and creates tiny diamond sparkles across the spring-time creek.  Though not many alpine shrubs have sprouted yet, spring’s still abundant snowfields contrast with the warm sienna and wine-colored willows thickly edging the creek.  As the old mining road is deep in shadow and still covered in many spots with heavy snow, we won’t be able to hike as far this time of year, but soon all this wonderful snowmelt will bring a plethora of summer wildflowers and another time to try to hike higher.”   Darcie Peet
