Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has selected Jessica Garrett’s oil painting, “Blinding Beauty” for the prestigious Governor’s Choice Award. Each year, the Desert Caballeros Western Museum invites the Governor of Arizona to judge the artworks entered by Arizona artists in the Museum’s “Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West” exhibition and sale. Mr. Ducey’s task was to select the piece he felt best represents the beauty and spirit of the State of Arizona. In April, Governor Ducey paid a virtual visit to the 13th annual “Cowgirl Up!”, ultimately picking Garrett’s piece out of a selection presented by 17 Arizona artists.
Born in San Antonio, Texas in 1983, Jessica Garrett has made the Valley of the Sun into her professional home. In 2005, she was awarded a scholarship from the Scottsdale Artists’ School, and crafted her technique through a combination of college classes and master class workshops. She has studied with R.A. Heichberger, Chris Sapier, Kevin Macpherson, Tim Deibler, and Skip Whitcomb. She has participated in the Bufffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in Cody, WY since 2010, and in Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West since 2014. In September 2007, Jessica was included in Southwest Art magazine’s article, “21 Under 31”. She says of her winning piece, “Blinding Beauty”, “I find the sunsets in Arizona to be some of the most spectacular. I think the combination of the dryness and the dust in the air is pure magic for evening light.”
