“The Warmth of the Sun”
Typically, I will go out and paint at a site and gather as much from the location I can in my oil or pastel outdoor sketches. I will also take many photographs that allow me to see more detail than is possible to grasp in a short outdoor painting session.
For this work, “The Warmth of the Sun” Oil 24” x 36”, I started on a January morning at first light. I would go to the location and just observe the sun rising and its effect on the colors and values on the objects. The moment was a very short amount of time so I just watched and paid attention and then took notes in my sketchbook about the colors, values and textures I was witnessing in the short time frame. I studied the effect over 3-4 days before going to my studio and drawing in the work. I only painted what I could remember in my studio after standing in the presence of this outdoor spot. I would look and study and take notes and then drive back to my studio to paint from my memory and my notes. I would only work until I painted certain effects that I would spot for the day and then return the next morning before the sunrise to look at the scene and study it once again as the sun was rising. I did this for about 2 weeks. I knew the sun would not be in this same position for very long, so I paid close attention to all the visual effects I could see and go back to my studio to paint them quickly and as my memory allowed. It was a fascinating process of being present and alert, one I will continue to utilize for future artwork. Lorenzo Chavez
