Mian Situ biography:
Mian Situ was born in southern China. His youthful surroundings would be a great resource for future paintings. Mian studied art at the Guangzhou Institute of Fine Art where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. After a few years away from the institute, he returned to study and earn a Masters of Fine Art. In an impressionistic style, Mian Situ creates paintings of the backcountry from his youth with his countrymen and women going about their daily lives in farming communities and villages. His artistic ability extends to portraiture and themes from the American west.
Situ is the 2018 Prix de West Award winner. This prestigious award is given to one artist out of almost 100 exhibiting in the annual exhibition and sale. Mian’s painting Blasting A Route Through The Sierra Nevada Mountains 1865, Central Pacific Railroad will become part of the permanent collection of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Prix de West collection. In 2009, he received the Masters of the American West Purchase Award from the Autry Museum of the American West for his painting Convergence of Cultures. He won the Gene Autry Memorial Award at the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013 Masters of the American West Exhibition. He was given the David P. Usher Patrons’ Choice Award and the Artists’ Choice Award at the 2006 Masters of the American West Exhibition; the Artists’ Choice Award at the 2005 Masters of the American West Exhibition; and the Thomas Moran Memorial Award for Painting and the Patrons’ Choice Award at the 2004 Masters of the American West Exhibition. In 2003, he received three Masters of the American West awards which were the Thomas Moran Memorial Award (exceptional artistic merit), Artist’s Choice Award and the Patron’s Choice Award. In 2002, his painting Powder Monkeys also won three awards, including the Purchase Award.During the 2000 Carmel Art Festival, Mian won the first-place prize. Also in 2000, he won the Artists’ Choice Award for best painting at the 90th Gold Medal Exhibition of the California Art Club. He has also received numerous awards from the National Juried Exhibition of Oil Painters of America.
