“Late afternoon, leaving Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy, we drove hilltop to hilltop, up and down, along fields of lavender, vineyards, olive orchards and stone farmhouses, finally arriving at Montalcino. Climbing the winding, narrow road to this hilltop, medieval-fortress town, from the top, we could look back as the countryside we had just driven softly faded into the distance. Late afternoon sun, soon to set, cast a warm, illuminating glow across historic buildings, rooftops and the spill of yellow broom bushes cascading down steep hillsides contrasting with the distant, soft, muted landscape and the surrounding “Brunello” wine-producing country.” Darcie Peet
