“Autumn Of The Ancients”
“The ancient peoples of the Southwestern United States, known today as the Anasazi or Ancestral Puebloans, have been an inspiration to me for over forty years. In my still life paintings, I depict their skillfully created vessels and other rare artifacts from a variety of these prehistoric cultures. Depicting the craftsmanship and artwork from an individual who lived approximately 1000 years ago is endlessly intriguing to me. I often incorporate indigenous plant, animal and other elements from ancient landscape that are still present today. All of these items would have been regularly used by the ancient Anasazi. The more I study the relationship they had with the landscape, the greater appreciation and connection I feel with their ancient and unique cultures.”
“Autumn of the Ancients” shows a collection of pottery vessels from the ancient Sinagua, Mogollon, and ancestral Hopi cultures, the colorful Common Sunflower, a native plant that was cultivated for seed and oil. Also shown is Mosquito Grass whose fragile and delicate seed heads were cultivated for use as brooms, brushes and strainers.” Robert Peters
